The very first one was Legacy, where addresses would start with a “1”. As Bitcoin’s price started to take off, the fees paid for each transaction started to look more pricey too. Non-witness and pre-segwit witness bytes weigh 4 WU, but each byte of Segwit witness data only weighs 1 WU, allowing blocks that are larger than 1 MB without a hardforking change. After the successful activations of OP_CLTV and OP_CSV, SegWit was the last protocol change needed to make the Lightning Network safe to deploy on the Bitcoin network. SegWit was an update to the Bitcoin protocol and stands for “segregated witness consensus layer”, a technological feature created to optimise transactions in 2015. In essence, SegWit reduces the size of blocks on a blockchain by segregating a transaction into two sections.

Oct 20, 2019 · SegWit (short for Segregated Witness) is an update to the Bitcoin protocol that changed the way data is stored on the blockchain. By separating certain transaction signature data from a transaction, it reduces the size of transaction data that must be stored in Bitcoin blocks. However, SegWit as a concept was originally formulated by Bitcoin developer Pieter Wuille, and it was meant to protect users from transaction malleability – a type of attack that allowed someone to change a unique identity of a Bitcoin Choose your wallet.

Segregated Witness--more commonly known as SegWit--is an upgrade to Bitcoin that makes transactions more secure and efficient. By separating (segregating) the main part of the transaction data from the part which authorizes the transaction (witness), the entire transaction becomes more secure.

Wuille is a Bitcoin developer and the co-founder of Blockstream, a software company that specializes in digital security for financial services. Wuille suggested SegWit as a solution to a flaw in the Bitcoin protocol. Segregated Witness, or SegWit, is the name used for an implemented soft fork change in the transaction format of Bitcoin. The formal title " Segregated Witness (Consensus layer) " had Bitcoin Improvement Proposal number BIP141. SegWit is a protocol update to Bitcoin that makes Bitcoin transaction sizes smaller, which allows Bitcoin to handle more transactions at once (scalability). It achieves this by separating Bitcoin signature data from transaction data.
